An Overview for Students Interested in Blueline’s Internship Programs
Blueline: A Literary Magazine Dedicated to the Spirit of the Adirondacks features high-quality poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and regional art focused on the Adirondacks, the North Country, and places similar in spirit and geography. Founded in 1979, the magazine has been published annually at SUNY Potsdam since 1989.
Writers from around the world publish in Blueline, which prints about 400 copies a year. The editors provide our contributors with individual copies as payment for publishing with us. The editors also sell copies of the magazine to subscribers and local bookstores.
Through Blueline’s Applied Learning internships, students gain valuable skills for careers in editing and publishing, magazine design, public relations, or environmental advocacy. Recently, students from a variety of majors and minors—including English, Graphic Design, Environment and Sustainability, Computer Science, and Finance—have apprenticed with Blueline.
Blueline’s editors and interns promote the magazine extensively online. Every year, we network with hundreds of writers, several prominent advertisers, and with the Sheridan Press, our publisher. Blueline’s interns, while learning about the publishing industry and assembling the magazine, all collaborate with the editors at every step, from page layout and cover design to copyediting. These tasks are central to preparing Blueline for publication and for its international distribution and sales.
Blueline relies indispensably on our website to sustain our online presence and our community outreach. Interns assist us in maintaining our online content and also help us run our sales and subscription campaigns.
