Art
Blueline typically features two regional artists per volume in 2D format. We’ll consider photography, art in various media (e.g. painting, drawing, or mixed media), as well as photography of sculptures. All the art we publish is related to the Adirondacks or focused on nature in some way.
The Art Editor will often contact regional artists and request that they submit their work to Blueline for consideration.
Artists are welcome to contact us about a possible feature. If you’re not sure what styles of art we’re interested in featuring, please query the editors. Provide two images, at most, before sending us any more of your work.
Please do not send any art that’s not related to the Adirondacks or not explicitly related to the natural world. Such submissions will be rejected.
Procedures for Submitting Art
The Art Editor works with individual artists in deciding which images of their work we will publish.
All art must be provided as JPEGs at 300dpi or higher. Images can be sent over email as attachments or through Dropbox.
-
Blueline’s editors collaborate with the Art Editor in making decisions about placing and formatting accepted art images. The Art Editor makes final decisions about which images to be featured on the magazine’s cover, on the frontispiece, and then within the magazine itself.
-
Along with accepted images, each featured artist must provide an Artist Statement of no more than 325 words. This statement will immediately precede and introduce the sequence of featured images. We try to print between 6 to 8 pages of images for each artist.
-
The editors may edit, enlarge, or crop images as needed to suit our page dimensions. The Art Editor will confer with the submitting artist if significant changes are needed for any image.
-
Artists will be notified, before the magazine is printed, about which images may appear on Blueline’s cover or on its frontispiece.
-
Artists will also need to submit a brief bio to be included in our Contributors pages. We’ll ask that you provide a bio of about 150 words or fewer.
-
Please also provide your mailing address.
Please note that Blueline’s editors may reproduce the magazine’s covers for promotional purposes, but we do not republish any art images, printed within the magazine, in media that we purchase from advertisers. In other words, we include the covers of each volume on our website, for instance, and note the artist and the title of the image. However, we don’t sell art images or supply them to advertisers from whom Blueline purchases ad space. Please let us know if you have any questions about our limited reproduction of covers for promotion and for specific acknowledgments.
