Blueline Internship Opportunities by Category
Professor Cantwell welcomes applications from eligible students interested in serving as interns for Blueline. Students must have a minimum of 30 credits completed and a 3.0 or higher GPA.
Internships for Blueline immerse students in applied learning, providing them with three upper-division, non-liberal arts credits per semester. Ideally, interns should be able to serve during both the fall and spring semesters, for a total of 6 upper-division, non-liberal arts credits.
Students can choose from the following internship categories:
-
Editorial Internships: Interns gain an in-depth understanding of Blueline’s place in the culture of literary magazines and assist in designing the magazine itself. Goals include developing a comprehensive grasp of how an internationally distributed literary magazine reaches its audience, uses design principles, and gets formatted and physically published. Central tasks will include assisting in the production of Blueline volume 47, with special focus on the layout of texts and visual art, copyediting of the volume, and proofing the authors’ bios for all contributors.
-
Public Relations, Promotional, and Social Media Internships: Interns assist in promoting Blueline by working with the magazine’s online platforms, including the Blueline website and Facebook page. While maintaining Blueline’s public outreach, interns learn how the magazine is advertised through print and online platforms—through our own website and Facebook pages. The editors also train interns in understanding Blueline’s profiles within various organizations’ websites, especially Poets and Writers Magazine, Newpages.com, and the Community of Literary Magazines and Presses (CLMP).
-
Students who choose Public Relations or Promotional internships develop skills in how to advertise Blueline and engage with our subscribers, donors, and regional bookstores that sell Blueline. Students may also learn how to launch successful subscription campaigns.
-
Interns can also assist the editors in researching available grants and applying for them.
-
Interns can also assist us in planning promotion events, on and off campus, and/or contributing to our periodic fundraising campaigns, in-person or online (or both). These campaigns are especially valuable to Blueline during our Anniversary Celebrations.
-
All interns, in the editorial or public relations/promotions categories, will get experience in both, as needed. Blueline’s editors engage our interns in fully collaborative ways. This allows us to deepen interns’ understanding of the publishing industry and to teach interns very valuable skills for entering a variety of careers.
